Types of Concrete Slabs
Several types of concrete slabs are used in different construction settings. Some are prefabricated while others are built on site. Prefabricated concrete slabs are constructed in a factory, transported to the site, and lowered into position between steel or concrete beams. Some prefabricated concrete slabs are pre-stressed, while others are left unstressed at the jobsite. Regardless of how the slab is manufactured, the supporting structure must be built to the right dimensions and specifications to ensure structural strength.
The sub-base is the foundation layer for slabs. The sub-grade is prepared by site-stripping to expose solid bedrock, clay, and sub-soil. The sub-base serves as the main load-bearing layer of a slab, and a well-installed sub-base reduces voids and settlement caused by traffic. A coarse mix of gravel can also be used as filler material.
